interest and zeal in the extraordinary situation in
which local shipping matters stand at present.
It is most strongly felt that the appointment, at the present time, of any other gentleman to this important office would be a retrograde movement, the result of which may have very far reaching effects on
the commerce of the Colony.
It is necessary, in justice to Lieutenant Commander Hake, to say that he would be the first to oppose were he awareof it) any action on the part of the Guilds in his behalf, but our feelings are so strong regarding this officer's rare and wonderful ability,
his very humane and tactful handling of the most difficult propositions, that, for the common good of all who do business in the great waters and others who reap the result of their labours, we feel that the unusual procedure we have been impelled, by reason, to adopt, is
justified.
